| September 2005 Newsletter |
Hello Everyone.
As this newsletter is long overdue, there are many things to discuss and.
We hope the following information will answer most of your questions and/or concerns.
|
The last association meeting was a success and we would like to thank all of those who attended.
Items that were discussed, as well as topics that are currently in the works are summarized in this month’s newsletter..
The Advisory Council has narrowed the selection from seven commissioned
designs down to three for the new entranceway project. There were many
challenges to address on this project, and we have looked at each design thoroughly.
We hope these designs address each of the foreseeable concerns. There were seven
different designs before we narrowed it down to these final three.
The Brookhaven Town Planning Department was instrumental in assisting us on
this project and we would like to especially thank Linda Peterson and David Barnes for
their help.
Money available for this project is approximately $30,000. The initial designs that
were presented to the board came in at cost of more than four times that amount.
In light of the cost we have come to the realization that we will have to keep the
project focused on construction of the walls and leave the landscaping, irrigation,
and electrical work to be done at a later date.
The next challenge was to overcome the difference in size of the two entranceways.
The Wireless Road entranceway is set back further and sits on much larger parcels of
land than the Hawkins Road entranceway. We are proposing to build the same size
walls at each entranceway and then address the size issue through future landscaping.
Please take some time and look at each design. There will be several opportunities
for residents to view the final three drawings. The first will be at the September 29
meeting where they will be on display. The plans will also be on display at the pumpkin
patch event on October 15. And, on October 26, the designs will be on display a final
time during our association meeting, at which a vote will be held to choose the winning design.
You may also download the designs by visiting the association’s website at www.southsetauketpark.com.
This project is important to our neighborhood as it creates a first impression to our visitors
as well as improving the overall aesthetics of our neighborhood. We hope that each and every
one of our residents takes part in this important decision.

The time has come to collect dues from our members and to increase our membership.
Please encourage your neighbors to attend our next meeting and the Pumpkin Patch.
Your dues money of $10 is spent in service to our community. Thank you, in advance,
for your support.

We live in a beautiful neighborhood. Not many of us would dispute that.
Unfortunately, in recent months there have been incidents that may make some
homeowners wonder how long it will look beautiful.
Recent acts of vandalism in our neighborhood have included damage to: car windows,
greenbelt fences, and the electrical system at the Wireless Road entranceway
In addition to the above-mentioned acts of criminal mischief, there have been no less
than three burglaries within the past 12 months in our community. One of these break-ins
occurred this month. Some of the stolen merchandise has been found in a makeshift “fort”
located in Levitt Park. This is the same “fort” where police arrested local teenagers last
year for underage drinking. To make matters worse, it seems the criminals are singling out
senior citizens to burglarize. Please keep an eye out for your neighbors and activate your
alarm system if you have one.
There have been additional acts of vandalism to our greenbelts and the adjacent Levitt Park.
Local teens have been spotted climbing trees and swinging from the branches for the sole purpose
of snapping off limbs. There have been several complaints and the sixth precinct has been
provided with at least one license plate number. We will keep you advised on the outcome.
Please call 911 every time you are either a victim of vandalism, see an act of vandalism
in progress or witness something that “just seems off”. From a mailbox being smashed to a
car being “keyed,” it is important to understand that there is no such thing as trivial
vandalism and that we as a community won’t stand for it.
In light of recent events, the association would like to activate our neighborhood watch,
or a Saturday evening walking club as soon as possible to help deter would-be vandals.
The association does not feel this is a problem out-of-control. We would, however, like
to send a message of intolerance to the perpetrators.
We have some volunteers, but could always use more! If you are interested,
please contact Ed Forrester or Ted Nienburg.

The homeowners association is hosting the second Pumpkin Patch on Saturday,
October 15th from 1 to 3 p.m. Michael Ardolino of Coldwell Banker has generously
offered to sponsor the event and supply the association with all of the pumpkins!
Pumpkins will be offered for sale at $2 each, with all proceeds going to the
South Setauket Park Homeowners’ Association for use toward future projects.
Food and refreshments will be available at no charge while you decorate pumpkins with
your choice of materials brought from home. In addition, the three entranceway designs
will be on display at the pumpkin patch for public viewing. So come on down and
see why children of all ages had so much fun decorating over 300 pumpkins last fall.
We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Donna Memoli of Coldwell Banker has been an overwhelming supporter
of our community. She has just donated another $500 for use in our neighborhood.
Donna has committed to donating $250 every time she lists and sells a house in South Setauket Park.
Thank you, Donna!

Recently, Eddie Forrester received a call from a Boy Scout who lives in our neighborhood.
The young man is in the process of working toward earning the title of Eagle Scout,
the highest honor in Scouting. He chose South Setauket Park as one of his projects.
He and his fellow Scouts from Troop 377 spent time in the large field cleaning out garbage
that had been dumped there. The Scouts names are: Will Brennan, KC Hebenstreit, Joe Woreth,
Justin Weissman, Garret Kulik, Chris Dere, Tyler Krell, Christian Lutz, John Duhart, and
Andrew Krell. The association would like to extend a sincere thanks to these Boy Scouts
for providing such a valuable service for our community.
