September's Meeting...

Last month’s meeting was a success and we would like to thank all of those who attended. Many topics were discussed and some outstanding items were taken care of. The positions of Secretary and Treasurer were filled by Barbara Gallagher and Denise Cariello. Several new ideas were presented by those in attendance and are summarized below.

Block Leaders
The park district will be split up into six sections. Each section will have a block leader. This individual will help deliver community newsletters, communicate issues particular to their section, and can choose to organize a neighborhood watch. This idea helps to break down the community into smaller and more manageable units and will make sure more voices in our community are heard. The civic association will coordinate the efforts of the block leaders and provide support through monthly meetings and contacts with government officials. Anyone interested in becoming a block leader should plan on attending the next community meeting on Thursday, November 18.

Entranceways
The replacement or renovation of our entranceways was an important topic. We have a limited budget for this project and it was decided that we explore the renovation of the existing walls. Our budget can afford to repair and apply a natural stone veneer to the existing walls. The walls would also be extended and include a weather-resistant sign. The remaining electrical and irrigation work will be completed as we can afford it, and the landscaping work will be done by our volunteers. Copies of the drawing and estimate of costs will be available at the next meeting.

Community Park
Many of the residents in attendance supported the idea of a community park. Ideally, the park would be located at the large field on Strathmore Village Drive and would include a playground, exercise trail, a large lawn, Chess/Checker tables, and a bocce court. The motivation for this park is to create a space for the community to congregate and enjoy the open spaces of our neighborhood. This idea is in the exploratory phase and we have enlisted the help of Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher and Brookhaven Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld.

Our Senior/Disabled Neighbors
We discussed various ways of helping our senior and/or disabled neighbors cope in the event of a snowstorm or natural catastrophe. One solution was to have the teenagers of our block send in their names and phone numbers for a snow emergency list. The idea was that these people would be called for snow removal jobs. Many people attending the meeting would be more than happy to hire these individuals during a snowstorm or even for possible small maintenance work around their homes. Anyone interested should attend the next meeting and sign up.

Neighborhood Watch
This idea was met with much enthusiasm. Please forward your name and phone number if you would like to participate in this endeavor. The board will ask the COPE unit to come discuss how this should be done. However, we will have to have enough volunteers for this to make sense.
